Canadian-founded, US-owned. Sorel boots were introduced in 1962 by the Kaufman Rubber Company of Kitchener, Ontario. When Kaufman Footwear went bankrupt in 2000, Columbia Sportswear (NASDAQ: COLM) bought the Sorel trademark but not the factories. The brand is run from Columbia's Portland headquarters and made offshore. Sources: Columbia's own brand history, plus Globe and Mail coverage of the Kaufman collapse.
