Canadian-owned · Toronto, Ontario
Resolved: the brand is Canadian-owned again, by a different Canadian company. After HBC filed for CCAA protection in March 2025 and liquidated its 355-year-old store network, an Ontario court approved the sale of the Hudson's Bay intellectual property to Canadian Tire Corporation (TSX: CTC) for $30M on June 3, 2025 — the coat of arms, the multi-stripe pattern, the Bay Days and Distinctly Home names, the domains and the customer data. Canadian Tire beat 16 other bidders. The former operating company was renamed Rupert Legacy and is winding down. So the trademarks live on under Canadian ownership, but the department stores are gone.
