A genuine split-brand case worth knowing: A&W's Canadian business was sold away from the US chain in 1972 and has operated as a separate Canadian company ever since — it only licenses the trademarks. In October 2024 A&W Food Services of Canada and the A&W Revenue Royalties Income Fund combined into a single Canadian public company (TSX: AW).
